An Egyptian mission has found two tombs from the Early Dynastic Period at the Jabal al-Tayr site in Minya along with burials from earlier and later eras.
The Supreme Council of Antiquities team made the finds during ongoing excavation work. Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy called the discovery a significant addition to Egypt’s archaeological record.
Hisham El-Leithy said the first tomb has a rare geometric design while the second remains in good condition. Both show similarities to the tomb of King Den at Abydos.
Mohamed Abdel Badie noted that the first tomb uses a construction method where walls thin toward the top. Sami Dardiri reported Predynastic burials in crouched positions with Naqada II and III pottery plus Late Period graves in wooden coffins.
