Ari Aster revealed that he wrote a prequel to his 2018 film Hereditary during a Q&A session. He stated that the project does not feel ready to move forward at this time.
The director spoke on Sunday night after a screening of Hereditary at the Egyptian Theatre. He told the audience that he completed the script but added that it never feels like the right time to shoot it. Aster noted that the story is a prequel rather than a sequel. He said he does not know where the idea might lead next. Hereditary marked Aster's feature debut and starred Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro and Gabriel Byrne. The filmmaker has since directed Midsommar, Beau Is Afraid and Eddington, all released by A24. Aster also mentioned that Danny DeVito attempted to finance Hereditary but could not secure the necessary funds. He described his eventual financier as creating one of the darkest periods of his life during production.
