The Oakland Athletics defeated the New York Yankees 1-0 on Thursday afternoon at Yankee Stadium, snapping New York's unbeaten series streak. Jeffrey Springs carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before Ben Rice's single broke it up. Ryan Weathers delivered his best start of the season for the Yankees but took the tough loss.
Oakland scored its lone run in the seventh inning when Max Muncy led off with his first career triple and crossed home on Tyler Soderstrom's single. Springs then departed after seven innings, allowing one hit, two walks and striking out six. Hogan Harris closed out the game for his first save of the year, securing the Athletics' first 1-0 win over the Yankees since 1979 and their first series victory at Yankee Stadium since 2016. The Yankees threatened in the seventh with Rice's single, runners advancing on a double steal, but Springs induced Austin Wells to fly out and end the inning. Rice singled to right with one out in the seventh, spoiling Springs' no-hitter bid. The left-hander admitted he lost track of the inning and did not realize the no-no was in play. “I honestly didn’t realize what inning it was,” Springs said. “I was an inning behind for some reason. I didn’t realize the no-hitter. … I was just going one pitch at a time. “He’s feeling really confident right now,” Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said. Weathers matched Springs pitch for pitch, tossing a season-high eight innings with one run allowed and seven strikeouts. Yankees manager Aaron Boone praised both starters. “He had a good four-seam with a really good changeup,” Boone said of Springs. “Weathers was just as good,” Boone added. In an unusual moment, Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson tore the cover partway off a baseball on a weak groundout against Weathers, sending it spinning like a helicopter along the grass.
