‘Atlantic Rhapsody’ wins best picture at Shanghai Film Festival

China’s ‘Atlantic Rhapsody’ took the top prize at the 28th Golden Goblet Awards during the Shanghai International Film Festival on June 20. The debut feature directed by Zhong Kaifeng also secured the award for best cinematography.

The film, which had its world premiere at the festival, is set in Northeast China and stars Yin Fang. At a press conference, Zhong explained how natural lighting and ambient sound shaped the story’s atmosphere. Yin described the central character as “a figure of that era, someone who wanted to make a big splash but ended up being toyed with by the times.”

The ceremony recognized entries from several countries. Belgium’s “Iluminada” received the jury grand prix, while Morocco’s “Halima” earned best director for Yassine El Idrissi and best actress for Khadija Amari. Zhang Songwen won best actor for the Chinese Mainland–Hong Kong co-production “Secret in the Box.”

Other honors went to Turkey-Germany entry “Night of Blindness” for best screenplay and German-French film “The Miserable Mother” for outstanding artistic achievement. The evening featured performances and closed with Tony Leung presenting the best picture award.
