Beat writer projects Kaleb Johnson off Steelers roster

ESPN’s Brooke Pryor has released her pre-training camp projection for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 53-man roster. Running back Kaleb Johnson, a 2025 third-round pick, is not included in her forecast.

Pryor placed veteran Travis Homer in the third running back role behind Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle. Homer is valued primarily for his special teams contributions, having recorded 972 special teams snaps and 43 tackles since 2021.

Johnson’s exclusion stems from a limited rookie season in which he saw little action and committed a notable special teams error. His limited skills as a receiver and blocker were also cited as factors.

Pryor’s projection aligns with other recent forecasts that favor rookie Eli Heidenreich over Johnson. If Johnson is released, the team may attempt to trade the former third-round selection before the deadline, possibly to a club such as the Dallas Cowboys.

The projection also includes Will Howard over Mason Rudolph at quarterback and Dean Lowry on the defensive line.

Bleacher Report has released its projected 2026 starting lineup for the Pittsburgh Steelers, highlighting three unexpected offensive selections amid recent roster moves.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Kaleb Johnson is expected to secure the No. 3 spot on the depth chart for the 2026 season. Beat writer Ray Fittipaldo made the assessment during a weekly chat on Wednesday. He cited the team's history with third-round picks entering their second year.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Kaleb Johnson faces uncertainty about securing a roster spot this season, according to local beat writers. The second-year player, a third-round draft pick in 2025, had a limited rookie year and special-teams issues. New additions to the team have further complicated his path forward.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have assembled a 10-player wide receiver group for the 2026 season. The unit features several new additions through trades, the draft and free agency.

The Pittsburgh Steelers remained at No. 21 in ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell's rankings of offensive playmakers ahead of the 2026 season despite several additions.

Mark Kaboly believes the Pittsburgh Steelers' third wide receiver will play a smaller role than expected in the upcoming season. With DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. as the main targets, the position could account for just 25 to 30 percent of snaps.
