Belgium has appointed Mark van Bommel as its new national team head coach on a contract through Euro 2028. The 49-year-old Dutchman replaces Rudi Garcia after the team's quarter-final exit at the 2026 World Cup. Van Bommel will start on August 15.
The Belgian Football Association announced the move on July 24. Van Bommel arrives from Royal Antwerp, where he won the Belgian Pro League title, Belgian Cup and Belgian Super Cup over two seasons.
“It is a great honour to become head coach of Belgium,” Van Bommel said. “Belgium has outstanding players and enormous potential. Together with my coaching staff, we want to build a team that is disciplined, ambitious and brave enough to compete with the very best.”
Sporting director Vincent Mannaert said Van Bommel’s experience as player and coach would help the Red Devils improve. His assistants will be Boudewijn Zenden, Maarten Martens and Reinier Robbemond.
Van Bommel’s first games are scheduled for the Nations League against Italy, France and Turkey in September and October.
