Benfica are on the verge of appointing Marco Silva to replace Jose Mourinho as head coach. The move comes as Mourinho prepares to join Real Madrid pending the outcome of an upcoming club election.
Benfica are closing in on the appointment of Marco Silva as they look to replace Jose Mourinho. Mourinho is set to take over at Real Madrid assuming Florentino Perez wins the presidential election on Sunday against challenger Enrique Riquelme. The election delay means Real Madrid will have to pay up to €15 million in compensation to Benfica. Silva has been at Fulham for five years and his contract expires at the end of the month. A report in Portuguese newspaper A Bola states Silva sought assurances from Benfica president Rui Costa and sporting director Mario Branca about his role in squad transformation. He has been offered a €5 million joining fee and similar annual salary. His appointment is expected to be confirmed in the next few days. Fulham had hoped to appoint Andoni Iraola as replacement but the Spaniard appears set to join Liverpool.
