Berlin misses mark of 30 million overnight stays

Fewer tourists visited Berlin in 2025 compared to the previous year, causing the city to miss the 30 million overnight stays milestone. Burkhard Kieker of Visit Berlin anticipates landing just below that figure. This represents a decline from the 30.6 million overnight stays recorded in 2024.

Berlin is facing a decline in tourism this year. By the end of October, 24.8 million overnight stays were recorded, a 4.1 percent drop from the same period last year. Burkhard Kieker, head of the Berlin Tourism Board Visit Berlin, told the "Tagesspiegel": "We will land just under the 30 million overnight stays."

Compared to 2024, when 30.6 million overnight stays were counted, the downturn is evident. The figures remain below the record year of 2019, the last pre-coronavirus period. Kieker attributes the decline mainly to weak consumer sentiment in Germany and Europe, coupled with the economy's failure to rebound.

The Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) is also hindering recovery. It operates 30 percent below pre-coronavirus levels, while tourism overall is about nine percent lower. These elements are impeding the sector's return to pre-crisis performance.

Germany's Federal Police recorded about 62,500 illegal entries at its borders in 2025, halving the figure from 2023. Since border controls were introduced in September 2024 and intensified in May 2025, thousands have been turned away. The measures aim to curb migration more effectively.

The plan balances resident quality of life with goals of 60 million inbound visitors and 15 trillion yen in spending.

Several popular travel destinations including Greece, Japan, Spain, and others are introducing higher fees, taxes, and crowd controls in 2026 to manage overtourism and support sustainability. American travelers face additional planning requirements, such as pre-bookings and levies, amid a 7.3% drop in U.S.-to-Europe bookings year-over-year. These measures aim to preserve cultural sites, natural resources, and local infrastructure while funding improvements.

Hong Kong welcomed 10% more visitors during the Christmas period than in 2024, while residents took nearly 1.7 million outbound trips, up 22% from last year. Despite the influx of tourists, merchants warn that the absence of New Year's fireworks could deter visitors and hurt the retail sector. Consumer sentiment has been dampened by last month's deadly Tai Po fire, which killed 161 people.
