The Bharatiya Janata Party announced Harshad Parmar, son of late MLA Govind Parmar, as its candidate for the Umreth assembly bypoll in Gujarat on March 30. The bypoll follows Govind Parmar's death on March 6 at age 72 after a brief illness. Polling is scheduled for April 23 by the Election Commission of India.
The Bharatiya Janata Party's central leadership announced Harshad Govindbhai Parmar as its candidate for the Umreth assembly constituency on March 30, 2026. This marks his first major electoral contest.
The bypoll became necessary after Govind Parmar, who represented the seat in Anand district, died on March 6 at the age of 72 following a brief illness.
Govind Parmar, a four-term legislator, had won the seat in the 2022 assembly elections by defeating Nationalist Congress Party's Jayant Patel, known as Boski, by a margin of over 25,000 votes.
Other parties, including the Congress, have not yet declared their nominees. The 182-member Gujarat assembly currently has 161 BJP members, 12 from Congress, five from Aam Aadmi Party, one from Samajwadi Party, and two independents. The next state assembly elections are expected in late 2027.
