On 19 April, the Blitzboks ended a decades-long drought at the Hong Kong Sevens, thrashing Argentina 35-7 to secure their historic first title in the tournament's oldest and most prestigious event.
South Africa had reached the final four times previously without winning. Head coach Philip Snyman expressed immediate relief after the final whistle. “To be honest, straight off the tournament, [I was] more relieved. Obviously very happy with the performance, but a lot of relief,” Snyman told Daily Maverick.
The victory stems from a rebuild launched two years ago when Snyman became interim coach in March 2024 following poor results. His approach emphasizes team culture, defensive strength, and processes. “I’ve learned from my playing days, I needed to create a healthy culture and a healthy environment,” Snyman said. The team openly addressed the Hong Kong challenge this time, setting it as a season goal.
On the field, defence is central given the squad's modest size. Snyman takes pride in systems that create pressure and strong tackles. Off-field, respect and brotherhood define their identity, with players caring for one another beyond the game.
Looking ahead, the Blitzboks balance current success with depth-building for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, debuting six youngsters this season. They next compete in Valladolid, Spain, from 29 to 31 May.
