CHICAGO -- Alejandro Kirk's left thumb fractured and dislocated when he caught a foul tip off the bottom of his glove during the Blue Jays' 5-4 loss to the White Sox on Friday. The Blue Jays announced the injury Saturday and placed the 2025 All-Star on the 10-day injured list. Kirk, 27, heads to Pennsylvania on Monday to see hand specialist Dr. Thomas Graham, who will determine if surgery or a pin is required, potentially affecting the length of his absence beyond a few weeks. Kirk was removed from the game and replaced by Tyler Heineman. The injury adds to Toronto's early-season woes, with a full rotation on the IL including Cody Ponce and outfielder Anthony Santander sidelined. The Blue Jays sit at 4-3 despite facing weaker opponents like the Athletics, Rockies, and White Sox. “He’s our general back there,” outfielder George Springer said. “He commands the game so well and does so much for us, not only behind the plate but offensively.” Kirk boasts a career .267/.343/.398 line with a 108 OPS+, strong for catchers, and excels in framing and blocking. Heineman, 34, takes over as starter after a solid 2025 (114 OPS+, 1.9 WAR in 61 games), though his career mark is 83 OPS+.
