Decomposing human remains found on a Bali beach have been identified as those of 28-year-old Ukrainian tourist Ihor Komarov, who was kidnapped and tortured during his holiday. Indonesian police confirmed his identity through DNA matching and have issued international arrest warrants for six foreign suspects. The motive remains under investigation, though reports suggest a ransom demand was involved.
On February 15, Ihor Komarov was riding a motorbike with a friend in the resort town of Jimbaran on Bali when a group of assailants forced him into a car. The friend reported the incident to police immediately. Komarov, who was vacationing with his girlfriend Yea Mishalova—a social media influencer—had been photographed with her on Valentine's Day, according to media reports.
Days later, locals discovered mutilated body parts on a nearby beach and beside a river. Bali police identified the remains as Komarov's through DNA samples compared to those from his mother. Police spokesman Ariasandy announced the findings in Denpasar, Bali's capital, displaying a document with Komarov's name and birthdate but not verbally naming him.
Authorities arrested the individual who rented the car used in the kidnapping. He implicated six other foreign nationals as suspects in the kidnapping and aggravated assault. All six have fled Indonesia, prompting police to issue an international red notice for their arrest. Ariasandy noted, "Some carried out the kidnapping; there may be others who subsequently committed abuse."
He added, "All of them are foreign nationals with passports that may number more than two. Some have two or three passports. Verification is being carried out abroad."
Media reports describe Komarov as the son of a wealthy Ukrainian businessman, with kidnappers allegedly demanding millions in ransom. However, police state the motive is still under investigation. The case highlights security concerns for tourists on the popular Indonesian island.
