Cost of becoming independent in Colombia ranges between 4.4 and 7.8 million

According to DANE data and Colfondos recommendations, becoming independent in Colombia requires initial savings between 4.4 and 7.8 million pesos to cover basic expenses in major cities.

The DANE 2026 National Quality of Life Survey showed that single-person households represent 20.2% of the total in the country.

Colfondos specialists detailed the initial expenses for moving out for the first time. These include the first month's rent and procedures between 1 and 1.5 million pesos, moving between 150,000 and 300,000 pesos, basic appliances between 2 and 3.5 million pesos, and essential furniture between 1.3 and 2.5 million pesos.

Monthly fixed expenses after the move range between 2 and 3.1 million pesos. Paola Orozco, commercial and customer service vice president at Colfondos, noted that 35% of severance withdrawals go toward housing.

Experts also recommend an emergency fund equivalent to between three and six months of basic expenses.

As resale ticket prices for Colombia's 2026 FIFA World Cup matches have surged—as previously reported—fintech firm Littio warns that hidden fees and poor financial planning could inflate total costs to $1 million per person for the 80,000–120,000 Colombians expected to travel to the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, plus 1.2 million migrants in the U.S.

An analysis by ITESO's Business School shows Mexico's food basket cost rose 67% from August 2018 to March 2026, outpacing general inflation of 45%. In urban areas, it increased from 1,500 to 2,571 pesos per person monthly. This hike particularly impacts low-income households.
