Daily Maverick adds Mondli Makhanya to its editorial roster

Daily Maverick has announced that award-winning journalist Mondli Makhanya will join the publication as a regular columnist writing a weekly political analysis column.

The announcement was made on 12 June 2026. Makhanya previously served as editor of the Sunday Times, Mail & Guardian and City Press. His column will appear in DM168 and he will also contribute to the Democracy 26 newsletter covering the 2026 local government elections.

Ferial Haffajee, Daily Maverick associate editor, said Mondli is one of the most important journalistic voices this country has produced. She noted his depth of political understanding and independence.

Makhanya said he is super-excited to join the team and add his perspectives to the publication. The column will run weekly from 12 June 2026.
