Dead eels after sewage leak in Malmö

A leak in the sewage pipe released wastewater into the Malmö canal for two days. Hundreds of dead eels have been found at Ribersborgsstranden and swimming is discouraged at several locations.

The wastewater has caused murky water and an unpleasant smell along the canal from Västra hamnen to Slottsparken. VA Syd states that the discharge was the least bad alternative and has asked residents to flush less.

The leak was stopped at 03 on Friday morning. VA Syd has no knowledge of the dead eels but will investigate together with Malmö city.

The eel has been red-listed since 2005 and is classified as critically endangered. Residents and business owners describe the findings as shocking and call the incident an environmental disaster.

VA Syd is urging central Malmö residents to flush toilets less, avoid laundry and dishwashing, and shower shorter or at friends' places outside the area. The reason is a leak in a major sewer line requiring repairs. Wastewater will be discharged into Malmö canal from May 5 at 19:00 to May 7 at 00:00.

Untreated wastewater continues flowing into the canal between Västra hamnen and Slottsparken at 300 liters per second after cracks were found in an old main sewer line. The discharge, which began after an announcement on May 4, is scheduled to run until midnight Thursday.

Repairs are underway on two cracks in an old Malmö sewage pipeline, with VA Syd continuing to discharge wastewater into the city's canal, as initially announced. Up to 300 liters per second could flow for over two days, per reports.

Following a major water leak in Varberg, the local waterworks has resumed producing drinking water, but residents are urged to conserve it to restore levels. The boil-water advisory remains in place, and the municipality activated its emergency water plan on Wednesday, deploying water tankers for distribution.

The City of Johannesburg’s wastewater treatment system is deteriorating significantly, with half of its plants in critical condition according to the 2025 Green Drop Report. Released on 31 March by the Department of Water and Sanitation, the report gives the metro an overall score of 48.8%, down from 91% in 2011. Failing plants are releasing poorly treated sewage into rivers, posing risks to public health and the environment.
