Dietary advice issued for self-caught fish in Uppsala due to PFAS

Uppsala municipality has issued dietary advice for self-caught fish in certain waters due to high PFAS levels. The environment and health protection committee recommends limited consumption to protect health. The advice is based on samplings from 2023 and 2025.

Uppsala municipality's environment and health protection committee has decided on dietary advice for self-caught fish following studies showing elevated PFAS levels, mainly PFOS, in fish from specific areas. PFAS substances can harm health with high consumption.

The advice applies to all fish species in the following waters within the municipality: Fyrisån between Ärna and Flottsund, northwestern Ekoln/Mälaren, and Sävjaån/Funboån. The decision remains in effect until further notice.

The recommendations were developed in collaboration with the Swedish Food Agency. Children and youth up to 18 years, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and those planning pregnancy should not eat the fish more than 2–3 times per year. Other individuals are advised to limit intake to at most once per month.

The environment department conducted the samplings in 2023 and 2025 according to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's guidelines to assess PFAS levels in fish. More information on PFAS in food is available on the Swedish Food Agency's website.

Researchers at Flinders University say they have developed an adsorbent material that removed more than 98% of short- and long-chain PFAS—including hard-to-capture short-chain variants—in laboratory flow-through tests using model tap water. The approach embeds nano-sized molecular cages into mesoporous silica and, in the experiments reported, could be regenerated while remaining effective over at least five reuse cycles.

Rising temperatures in an Alaska river are causing invasive northern pike to eat more fish, threatening already declining salmon populations. Researchers from the University of Alaska Fairbanks analyzed pike stomach contents and found significant increases in consumption, especially among younger fish. The findings raise concerns about combined effects of climate change and invasive species.
