Delhi L-G leads plantation drive across ridge areas

Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu led a plantation drive on Friday, with more than one lakh native trees and shrubs planted across 77 locations in Delhi.

The drive was organised by the Delhi Development Authority, of which Mr. Sandhu is chairperson. Participants planted native species including dhok, amaltas, peepal and neem at sites such as Kamla Nehru Ridge, Aravalli Biodiversity Park and Sanjay Van.

Mr. Sandhu directed the DDA to appoint a nodal officer for each site to monitor sapling survival and to make such drives a regular activity. He also urged greater involvement of youth, stating that the present generation has a responsibility to leave behind an ecologically richer Delhi.

Close to 200 people, including students, took part at Kamla Nehru Ridge. The events form part of the DDA’s afforestation programme and the 70 Lakh Plantation Mission, under which the authority aims to plant 23 lakh saplings in the city.
