DepEd allows school staff work-from-home on Fridays during break

The Department of Education has allowed school-based personnel to work from home every Friday during the end-of-school-year break. DepEd Undersecretary Fatima Lipp Panontongan issued the memorandum on April 9, amending an earlier policy. The move supports energy conservation efforts.

DepEd Undersecretary and chief of staff Fatima Lipp Panontongan issued a memorandum on April 9, permitting school-based non-teaching and related teaching personnel to follow a four-day onsite schedule from Monday to Thursday, with work from home on Fridays. This applies from April 10 to June 5, 2026.

Panontongan stated, “In line with the department’s energy conservation efforts… flexible working arrangement adopting a four-day onsite work schedule (Monday to Thursday) and WFH on Fridays shall also apply to school-based non-teaching and related teaching personnel for the period from April 10 to June 5, 2026.”

School heads must ensure the arrangement does not disrupt essential operations and that proper staffing is maintained. The policy aligns with Memorandum Circular 114 signed by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto, directing government agencies to adopt a four-day onsite work arrangement to cut energy consumption and fuel use.

DepEd had previously issued Memorandum 18 implementing the same schedule. The 2025-2026 school year ended on March 31.

Indonesia's government has mandated work from home (WFH) for civil servants (ASN) every Friday starting April 1, 2026, to boost energy and mobility efficiency. The policy, set via circulars from MenpanRB and Mendagri, could save the state budget Rp6.2 trillion. Private firms, BUMN, and BUMD are urged to follow suit through a forthcoming Menaker circular.

The Department of Education has approved a four-day onsite workweek for its non-teaching personnel starting March 9. This measure aims to conserve energy amid rising global fuel prices due to Middle East conflicts. Teachers will maintain their regular schedules.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that starting March 9, some executive offices will implement a four-day workweek due to rising oil prices from the Middle East crisis. Measures include reducing energy and petroleum use, while coordination continues for aid to Filipinos. Business groups are open to similar arrangements but express concerns for certain sectors.

The Economy and Development Council has approved a trimester school calendar to improve learning outcomes. The new system divides the 201-day school year into three terms, according to the Department of Economy, Planning and Development. However, the Alliance of Concerned Teachers opposes it for lacking teacher input.

Following the Economy and Development Council's approval of a three-term school calendar for public schools starting School Year 2026-2027, private schools are not required to adopt it without new legislation, according to the Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations (COCOPEA). DepEd maintains the policy resulted from broad consultations.

Following the Secretariat of Public Education's decision to end the 2025-2026 school year on June 5, President Claudia Sheinbaum defended the move while unions and parents raised objections over strikes, calendars, and legal requirements.

President Ferdinand Marcos has directed all government agencies to strictly implement cuts in power and fuel use amid rising oil prices from the Middle East conflict. Executive Secretary Ralph Recto emphasized that compliance is mandatory across the bureaucracy. Inspections have already covered over 1,000 offices.
