Disney teams with Adobe on AI tools for ride designs

Walt Disney Imagineering and Adobe have formed a partnership to integrate Adobe Firefly AI into the design of theme park attractions. The collaboration aims to accelerate the creation of rides and characters using proprietary Disney assets.

The partnership was announced on Tuesday. Imagineers will soon start using Firefly within existing Adobe tools to generate franchise-accurate images of characters such as Mickey Mouse and Elsa, convert sketches into 2D concepts, and produce 3D prototypes.

Kyle Laughlin, senior vice president of research and development at Walt Disney Imagineering, said the work with Adobe will bring Disney stories to life in the parks faster while maintaining expected emotional quality.

The AI models are trained on licensed and proprietary Disney designs. Disney offered no comment on potential effects on Imagineering jobs. The move follows the company's introduction of an AI animation tool last year.

Cartwheel, a new 3D animation startup founded by former OpenAI scientist Andrew Carr and former Google creative director Jonathan Jarvis, seeks to make AI-generated animations more editable and controllable. The company focuses on converting simple 2D videos into precise 3D skeletons, allowing artists to refine outputs rather than relying on uneditable 'black box' prompts. Founders emphasize providing a 'control layer' to prevent AI sameness and enable open-ended storytelling.
