DIW economist warns technology openness leads to industry decline

Martin Gornig from the DIW sees technology openness as a risk to German industry in competition with China and advocates for specialized niches.

Berlin economist Martin Gornig, research director for industrial policy at the German Institute for Economic Research, spoke on Friday about Germany's industrial competitiveness.

Gornig stressed that the response to China's dominance lies in niches such as specialized robotics in the construction sector. Making mass production better here is nonsense, the expert said.

He sharply criticized technology openness in the automotive sector. “Technology openness is the decline of German industry if it means insufficient investment in any technology,” Gornig told the German Press Agency.

Bold policy must take risks and promote individual technologies in a targeted manner, the DIW representative demanded.
