Egypt expands power grid as electricity losses hit 4.6bn kWh

Egypt is coordinating with Russian partners to accelerate the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant as part of a strategy for sustainable energy, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat said on Sunday. The nuclear project forms a key pillar of Egypt’s Vision 2030 to meet rising electricity demand and enhance energy security.

Esmat informed Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly during a meeting reviewing sector developments that work on the peaceful nuclear program is proceeding on schedule. Madbouly emphasized that the electricity and energy sector is a government priority due to its role in development plans, improving service quality, and fostering an investment-friendly environment.

In a report on grid modernization, Esmat detailed the completion of 34 new transformer stations at various voltage levels, integrated into the national grid over the past year, along with expansions at 40 existing stations. The ministry extended distribution lines by 194,000 kilometers and transmission lines by 5,610 kilometers to enhance network coverage.

Addressing inefficiencies, the minister highlighted efforts against power theft, with authorities recording 4.6 billion kilowatt-hours stolen. To boost monitoring and collection, 2.5 million “coded” meters have been installed nationwide.

The meeting highlights Egypt's government focus on expanding energy infrastructure and ensuring long-term sustainability to align with national development goals.
