Egypt starts training Palestinian police and urges international force in Gaza

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty announced the start of training Palestinian police officers on Egyptian territory to take on security roles in Gaza once a stable ceasefire is in place. This came during a joint press conference in Berlin with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul, where Abdelatty called for the rapid deployment of an international stabilisation force to ensure a lasting ceasefire. Both sides emphasized the need to accelerate Gaza's reconstruction and facilitate humanitarian aid.

On December 2, 2025, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty announced during a joint press conference in Berlin with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul a training program for Palestinian police officers on Egyptian territory. The program aims to fill the security vacuum resulting from over two years of war in Gaza, preparing them to assume security responsibilities after a stable ceasefire.

Abdelatty added that Cairo seeks to increase the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza "without restrictions" to meet the growing needs of its population. He stressed the urgency of consolidating the ceasefire and advancing to the second phase of the U.S. peace plan, warning that "time is running out." Egypt is coordinating with Washington to set a date for an international reconstruction conference.

For his part, Wadephul urged Cairo to expedite preparations for the conference, noting that the approaching winter will worsen Gaza's already dire humanitarian situation. Berlin affirmed its commitment to supporting reconstruction and readiness to participate as soon as invitations are issued, reiterating that Hamas's disarmament remains essential and calling on Israel to uphold the ceasefire and allow greater aid volumes.

In a separate meeting with Gunther Sautter, the German Chancellery's National Security Advisor, Abdelatty called for the rapid deployment of an international stabilisation force in Gaza to ensure a lasting ceasefire, emphasizing the implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 2803. He outlined Egypt's mediation efforts over the past two years and expressed Cairo's hope for active German participation in the "International Conference for Early Recovery and Reconstruction of the Gaza Strip."

The two sides launched a new mechanism for political consultation at the foreign ministerial level, discussing economic cooperation including inviting German companies to increase investments in Egypt, particularly in the automotive industry, as well as collaboration in energy, renewables, and climate change.
