The Ethiopian Electric Power service is working to install 500,000 smart prepaid meters in the upcoming budget year. So far in Addis Ababa, meters have been fitted for over 10,000 customers, including both existing and new ones. This project seeks to bolster revenue protection and address billing-related complaints.

On Tahisas 24, 2018, in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian Electric Power service (EEP) announced plans to install 500,000 smart prepaid meters during the upcoming budget year. This initiative, part of the revenue protection and unified prepayment project, enables customers to purchase power credits through their mobile phones and track consumption remotely.

Project manager Lemlem Basazenew stated, "The smart prepaid meters allow customers to buy credits via phone and monitor power purchase and usage." She added that it will resolve complaints associated with billing.

To date, in Addis Ababa, installations have reached 6,500 existing and 3,500 new customers, located in areas such as Gerji 40/60, Balderas Community, Mekanisa, and Hana Furin, among other residential complexes. The total comprises 125,000 three-phase and 375,000 single-phase meters. To further expand the program, EEP has ordered an additional 120,000 meters for import. This effort aims to reduce disruptions in service delivery caused by various issues.
