Hlongwa family: Late MEC 'fought hard' to clear corruption name

The family of former Gauteng Health MEC Brian Hlongwa, who died earlier this week amid corruption charges, says he tirelessly sought to prove his innocence. Brother Vusi Hlongwa shared the family's grief and request for privacy as they mourn.

Following the death of Brian Hlongwa on Tuesday after a short illness—as previously reported—his family has spoken out on his battle against fraud, corruption, and money laundering allegations tied to multi-million rand deals in the Gauteng health department.

Hlongwa, his wife Joeline, and six others faced trial in April 2026 over irregularities uncovered in a Special Investigating Unit report from his time as MEC. Speaking for the family, brother Vusi Hlongwa said: “He fought very hard to clear his name. He would have loved to have his day in court in the first two years of the allegations… unfortunately, this thing dragged for such a long time.”

Vusi added: “As far as the people of South Africa are concerned, I think the family would ask to be given the privacy to mourn the loss of our brother and surely, if he had his time, he would have proven his innocence.”

Funeral arrangements are not yet public, as the family grieves amid the unresolved legal proceedings.

Two parallel inquiries in South Africa have uncovered deep distrust and corruption allegations within law enforcement, stemming from claims of a drug cartel's infiltration into police and politics. Key figures like former minister Bheki Cele and Vusimuzi Matlala face scrutiny over financial dealings, while the disbandment of a task team raises questions about protecting criminals. The Madlanga Commission is set to submit an interim report this week, though it will remain confidential.

His death comes as he faced serious corruption charges related to R1.2-billion in alleged fraudulent transactions in the provincial health department. The ANC confirmed the news, highlighting his long history as an anti-apartheid activist.

Former IPID head Robert McBride testified on January 20, 2026, before Parliament's ad hoc committee, accusing KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi of attempting to undermine an investigation into former acting national commissioner Khomotso Phahlane. McBride described Mkhwanazi and Phahlane as close associates and highlighted inconsistencies in Mkhwanazi's involvement in the 2020 murder of IPID investigator Mandla Mahlangu. The testimony raises questions about internal rifts in South Africa's law enforcement amid broader allegations of cartel infiltration.
