The 49-year-old cyclist and security officer David Sejobe was buried in his home village in Limpopo following a fatal hit-and-run accident in Johannesburg. David Sejobe, a 49-year-old husband and father of three, was laid to rest on February 7, 2026, at Ha-Mashamba in Mukondeni village, outside Elim in Limpopo. He had died the previous weekend in a hit-and-run incident while cycling in Johannesburg, an event that shocked his community and colleagues.
Scores of family, friends, and coworkers attended the funeral service held in a local field, sharing memories of Sejobe's joyful and kind nature. Known for his warm personality, he was described as a friendly presence both at work as a Johannesburg-based security guard and in his personal life.
One colleague, Kwanele Gumede, expressed deep sorrow: “It was very nice to work with David. David was a different person. I can say a lot. Even now, I am not well to talk about David because it’s painful. David did a lot for us.” Sejobe's passion for health and fitness earned him recognition as a champion in the field. He inspired locals to adopt active lifestyles, contributing to the formation of a health and fitness club in his community.
As co-founder of the Mutakalo Wanga Foundation, which promotes healthy living through cycling, Sejobe's death represents a significant loss. A foundation representative lamented: “We feel so sad. It’s a sad moment because we lost a giant. We lost someone that we were looking up to as he inspired a lot of people from this community.” The organization was established partly due to Sejobe's visible dedication, including long bike rides and walks.
The bereaved family remains devastated, particularly by the circumstances of his death. One mourner stated: “The family is shattered. We are very sad for losing this young man. He is very loved by many people. He was a good man with a good heart. He had a beautiful soul and now we have lost him. The most critical thing which makes us sad is the way he lost his life.” They have urged authorities to apprehend the motorist involved.
Sejobe had ambitious plans ahead, including a cycling journey from South Africa to Ethiopia scheduled for April 2026, highlighting his enduring commitment to fitness and adventure.
