FCC chairman disputes The View's news status

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr has challenged ABC's assertion that "The View" qualifies as a bona fide news program. The dispute involves the show's eligibility for an equal-time exemption under a 2002 FCC ruling. Carr highlighted recent comments by the show's co-hosts.

Carr pointed to statements by Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin that dismissed sexual assault allegations against Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner. ABC has filed arguments stating the program's choices rely on newsworthiness rather than partisan aims.

The network has accused the Trump administration of attempting to restrict free speech. It noted that more than 77,000 public comments were submitted, with the majority supporting the show.

An FCC spokesperson responded that ABC should focus on complying with its public interest obligations. The disagreement centers on whether the program has shifted from its original format.

ABC and its Houston station KTRK-TV have asked the Federal Communications Commission to reaffirm that “The View” qualifies for an exemption from the agency’s political “equal opportunities” (often called “equal time”) rules, arguing the FCC’s current approach risks chilling constitutionally protected speech.

The Federal Communications Commission has directed Disney's ABC to file early broadcast license renewals for its eight TV stations, following backlash over a joke by Jimmy Kimmel about first lady Melania Trump. The order comes amid criticism from President Donald Trump and Melania Trump, who linked the comedian's remark to a recent assassination attempt on the president. ABC maintains full compliance with regulations.
