Florida sues OpenAI and Sam Altman over ChatGPT safety

Florida filed the first state lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman on Monday, alleging the company prioritized profits over user safety in designing ChatGPT.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed the civil complaint in state court. The suit accuses OpenAI of deceptive trade practices, negligence and product liability violations, claiming the chatbot promotes addiction, cognitive decline and harmful content while being marketed as safe. It seeks penalties, court orders and personal liability for Altman, citing his alleged disregard for risks to human life.

OpenAI is currently facing upwards of SEVEN lawsuits just tied to suicides from interactions with ChatGPT.

Sam Altman said safety was the number one area of disagreement in the company.
