Frankfurt distributes Christmas market vouchers to 8000 children

The city of Frankfurt is enabling 8000 children from low-income families to visit the Christmas market with vouchers worth up to 20 euros. The initiative targets children aged three to twelve who hold a Frankfurt Pass. It aims to ensure no child is excluded from the holiday festivities.

Frankfurt is launching an initiative to make the Christmas market accessible to everyone. Around 8000 boys and girls with a Frankfurt Pass will automatically receive vouchers that they can redeem for rides on carousels or purchases of food and drinks at the new children's Christmas market. The vouchers, worth up to 20 euros, are valid at stalls on the children's Christmas market on the Mainkai as well as on carousels at the main Christmas market on Hauptwache, Paulsplatz, and Römerberg.

The city's social department announced that the action targets children aged three to twelve. «With this, they can spend up to 20 euros on carousel rides or food and drinks at the children's Christmas market,» the statement said. Social and Health Commissioner Elke Voitl of the Greens emphasized: «This action is part of our broad alliance against child and youth poverty. How children grow up must not depend on how much their parents earn.»

The children's Christmas market on the Mainkai, east of the Iron Footbridge, invites visitors until December 22 for creative activities, including decorating gingerbread, crafting decorations, a Christmas world tent, stick bread, and children's punch. Nina Malaviya from Tourism+Congress GmbH Frankfurt (TCF) stated: «The Frankfurt Christmas market should be a festival for everyone. This initiative for the new children's Christmas market ensures that no child in Frankfurt is excluded from the Christmas events.»

The Frankfurt Pass is for people with low income and primary residence in the city. It provides benefits such as free or reduced entry to municipal cultural and leisure facilities and discounted Deutschlandtickets. Following a 25 percent increase in the income threshold at the start of the year, about 160,000 people are now eligible. The vouchers will be sent automatically without application.
