French Islamologist François Burgat convicted on appeal for terrorism apology

François Burgat, 78, was sentenced on May 27 by the Aix-en-Provence appeal court to a fine and payment of damages to civil parties. Acquitted at first instance, the former CNRS research director has filed an appeal to the Court of Cassation.

The academic was prosecuted for statements made or reposted on his X account in 2024, including the sharing of a Hamas communiqué saluting the “blessed Operation al-Aqsa Flood”.
