French ministry may revisit EU-Israel deal after Lebanon strikes

The spokesperson for the French Foreign Ministry described Israeli strikes in Lebanon on Wednesday as «disproportionate». Pascal Confavreux said France could not rule out reopening talks on suspending the EU-Israel association agreement. This stance follows recent events in Lebanon and the West Bank.

Pascal Confavreux, spokesperson for the French Foreign Ministry, stated on Thursday that «Israel of course has the right to defend itself, but its actions are not only unacceptable but also disproportionate» following strikes in Lebanon on Wednesday.

He added that, given the gravity of these events and the situation in the West Bank with settler actions, «one cannot exclude that the discussion on suspending the association agreement between the European Union and Israel will reopen», alongside possible national sanctions.

The agreement, in force since 2000, promotes political dialogue and trade exchanges. Any suspension requires unanimity among the 27 EU member states.

Last year, the EU began reviewing the deal due to the Gaza escalation, at the request of countries like the Netherlands. A European Commission report found Israel in violation of Article 2 on human rights. Germany opposed any full suspension.

The European Parliament is voicing growing concerns over US interferences, including sanctions against figures like Thierry Breton and Judge Nicolas Guillou. A special commission led by Nathalie Loiseau plans a session on the issue. At the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen appears to be looking the other way.

Former French Prime Minister Michel Barnier called, in a televised interview on March 8, for managing the fallout from US and Israeli strikes in Iran, emphasizing the need to ramp up arms production to avert a future shortage. He criticized the lack of a European defense policy and proposed an active role for France in the region.

The European Parliament rejected a motion of censure against Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday, January 22, initiated by the far right over disputes surrounding the Mercosur agreement. The motion garnered only 165 votes in favor against 390 against. The French government firmly opposes any provisional application of the treaty, calling it a 'democratic violation'.

Ursula von der Leyen announced to EU leaders the postponement to January of the Mercosur trade agreement signing, originally set for Brazil this weekend, after failing to secure a majority due to French and Italian opposition for stronger farmer safeguards—following earlier EU proposals and amid massive Brussels protests.
