The Cleveland Guardians are promoting their No. 1 prospect, Travis Bazzana, from Triple-A Columbus, a club source told MLB.com on Monday night. Bazzana has impressed early in the season with a strong slash line in the minors.
Cleveland Guardians officials confirmed the call-up of Travis Bazzana, their top prospect and the 16th-ranked in MLB per MLB Pipeline, from Triple-A Columbus. The move comes after Bazzana posted a .287/.422/.511 slash line in 24 games this season, including 11 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 10 RBIs, 21 walks and 25 strikeouts. A club source shared the news with MLB.com on Monday night, noting the 23-year-old Australian could see action as soon as Tuesday versus the Tampa Bay Rays at Progressive Field in Cleveland. Bazzana made history as the first No. 1 overall draft pick in franchise history and the first Australian-born player selected first overall in the 2024 MLB Draft. He earned a non-roster invite to big league spring training and represented Australia in the World Baseball Classic. Guardians assistant general manager James Harris praised his self-coaching ability in March, saying, “He knows exactly what he does well. He knows what he needs to work on. He motivates himself and he partners well with us.” Harris added, “If we could pay someone to follow him around to tell him all the things that he already knows, like we'd be out of jobs.” Despite an injury-limited 2025 season with an .813 OPS over 84 games split between Double-A Akron and Columbus, Bazzana focused on oblique issues in the offseason. Guardians president Chris Antonetti noted on April 19, “One of the things we've loved about Travis is we felt he had a really good foundation in his swing and felt it was a very repeatable swing that, when he's been at his best, he's been able to do for long stretches.” The promotion aligns with infield adjustments: shortstop Gabriel Arias is on the injured list with a left hamstring strain, shifting Brayan Rocchio to shortstop. Juan Brito, Cleveland's No. 16 prospect promoted from Columbus on April 7, has filled second base but is expected to return to Triple-A.
