Hamas image used in promotion for Gothenburg demonstration

Organizers of a planned pro-Palestinian demonstration in Gothenburg are using a poster featuring symbols of terror-designated groups like Hamas and PFLP. Experts identify the images as linked to these organizations, while the organizers defend the choice by referencing resistance to occupation. The event is part of ongoing protests against the war in Gaza.

For over two years, demonstrations against the war in Gaza and in support of Palestine have been held across Sweden, including in Gothenburg. A new pro-Palestinian rally is planned for Sunday at Gustav Adolfs torg, organized by the groups Floden and Samidoun.

The poster for the event, shared on social media, features the organizers' logos along with texts such as "long live the resistance" and "resistance is a legitimate right when the people are under occupation". The image depicts armed and masked individuals with symbols on hats and headbands. Middle East analyst Aron Lund at the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) examined the images and identifies them as follows: "The person in the black hat belongs to the Mujahedin battalions. The colleague to the right in the green headband is from Hamas, and next to him in the red headband stands a man from PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine)". He adds that "Hamas and PFLP have been on European terror lists for a long time".

Samidoun Gothenburg responds in an email to Dagens Nyheter: "Yes, we feel it is time to show open support for the resistance groups fighting for Palestine's liberation and against a protracted and vile genocidal war". The network states that the organizations "are often misrepresented and misunderstood in Western media" and that they stand "unconditionally in solidarity with their struggle". Floden clarifies that the image choice does not imply support for specific organizations, but that Western terror designations "are often made without considering the full political and historical context".

Dagens Nyheter first reported on the poster on November 22, 2025.
