Gerner earned his PhD in history in 1984 and became docent at Lund University, where he also served as lecturer from 1985. From 1994 to 2002, he was professor of East European history and culture at Uppsala University. From 2002 to 2009, he held a professorship in history at Lund University.
As a specialist on Russia, Gerner frequently appeared in the media as an analyst and commentator, especially on the Soviet Union's collapse and recent Russian power claims. He was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences and author of several books.
