Hong Kong police to expand drone patrols to Peak, Cheung Chau and Lamma Island

Hong Kong police will expand drone patrols to all major regions starting Friday, including The Peak, Cheung Chau and Lamma Island, for crime prevention, crowd control and traffic monitoring. This second phase joins existing operations in Heung Yuen Wai and Kowloon West to further test drone capabilities.

Hong Kong police will expand drone patrols to all major regions from Friday, including The Peak, Cheung Chau and Lamma Island, for crime prevention, crowd control and traffic monitoring.

Superintendent Tango Ko Chung-ying of the force’s key points and search division said the second phase of the patrols, which would join existing operations in Heung Yuen Wai and Kowloon West, aimed to further test the capabilities of the drones. “Besides a more complex terrain, we will also be encountering more policing scenarios, meaning the drones will work more closely with ground officers,” Ko said.

Both automatic and manually controlled drones will be deployed on The Peak, Cheung Chau and Lamma Island as needed, depending on operational needs and prevailing crime trends. Ko said the force chose the three locations as they were larger and more densely populated than the Heung Yuen Wai border area and had more signal sources than the flatter, less busy border zone.

The force will also expand its manual drone patrols in urban areas to Central, Sau Mau Ping, Yuen Long and Tsuen Wan from Friday, covering one district in each major police region on land. This initiative seeks to enhance policing efficiency through closer integration of drones with ground teams to address diverse challenges.

Following the December 29 announcement of 'Justice Mission 2025,' the PLA Eastern Theater Command has launched joint drills around Taiwan, testing multi-service combat capabilities in sea-air patrols, blockades, and deterrence. Taiwan has deployed forces, missile systems, and remains on high alert, criticizing the exercises as a challenge to norms.

Hong Kong's transport chief Mable Chan said more than 100 submissions for drone projects in the low-altitude economy have been received, with some pilot projects set to launch in the first half of this year. The move aligns with Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu's 2024 policy address establishing a government working group to foster low-altitude flying activities.

An environmental group has called for long-term measures to tackle overtourism in Hong Kong's scenic Sai Kung district after the number of tents at campsites reached more than nine times capacity on the second day of Lunar New Year, though authorities say the situation is “under control”. Greenpeace reported counting 585 tents at Ham Tin Wan and Sai Wan the previous day, exceeding the 50-tent limit at each site.

Traffic at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge hit peak levels in the first two days of the holiday, with passenger flows exceeding 192,000 and vehicles surpassing 30,000, leading to checkpoint queues sometimes over an hour. Ringo Lee Yiu-pui, honorary life president of the Hong Kong, China Automobile Association, said on Monday it marked one of the busiest periods in recent years.

Continuing its 'Justice Mission 2025' exercises launched on December 29, the People's Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command held the second day of drills on December 30, featuring live-fire operations simulating maritime attacks and anti-air and anti-submarine missions north and south of Taiwan. The manoeuvres serve as a warning to 'independence forces' and external interference. Taiwan's defence ministry detected a record 130 PLA aircraft, 14 ships, and eight coastguard vessels near the island in the prior 24 hours.
