Hundreds of people, authorities and colleagues paid tribute on Saturday to agents Germán Pérez and Jerónimo Jiménez at the Concepción church in Huelva, after their deaths on Friday in a collision during a maritime pursuit.
The funeral took place with large attendance from citizens and institutional representatives. The coffins, covered with the Spanish flag, were carried by Civil Guard colleagues to the church, where Bishop Santiago Gómez Sierra led the mass.
Gómez Sierra noted that the agents were "torn from life while fulfilling their duty" and criticized drug trafficking as a business "stained with tears and blood". The bishop called for more resources for security forces and greater social intolerance toward drug trafficking, which has turned Huelva into a main entry point.
Among the authorities present were State Secretary for Security Aina Calvo, Civil Guard Director General Mercedes González and Andalusian regional president Juanma Moreno. Socialist candidate María Jesús Montero was booed upon arriving at the funeral chapel.
Juanma Moreno lamented the loss of "two great public servants" and recalled that drug trafficking is a "very serious problem" for Andalusia, similar to the one that occurred two years ago in Barbate.
