Icelandic amateur makes U.S. Open history

Gunnlaugur Arni Sveinsson, a 20-year-old from Iceland, became the first golfer from his country to qualify for the U.S. Open after advancing through final qualifying in Ohio.

Sveinsson survived a four-for-three playoff last Monday in Westerville, Ohio, to earn his spot at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. His parents, Halla Arnadottir and Sveinn Ogmundsson, along with coaches and a dozen members from his home club, traveled to Long Island to support him.

The young player began setting goals at age 12 and turned professional ambitions into reality despite Iceland’s short golf season. He now ranks 14th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking after strong performances at Louisiana State University.

Sveinsson is scheduled to tee off at 2:20 p.m. on Thursday. He said he has prepared thoroughly for the challenge ahead.

His mother expressed pride in what the milestone means for young golfers back home. “If you have the dedication and focus, you can do it,” she said.
