India adds over 2.5 million demat accounts in June

India recorded more than 2.5 million new demat accounts in June, the highest monthly total since February. The increase coincided with gains in the Nifty 50 and Sensex indices.

The rise in accounts came amid improved market sentiment after geopolitical tensions eased and several companies signaled upcoming IPOs. Retail investors responded to broader market participation and easier digital onboarding processes.

Market observers noted that continued growth in demat accounts will hinge on sustained performance by Indian equities and renewed investor confidence. Officials from depositories such as NSDL and CDSL tracked the monthly figures.

The June data reflects renewed interest from individual investors following the market rebound on D-Street.

Domestic institutional investors raised their holdings in several large-cap Indian companies during the March 2026 quarter. Buying focused on financial, technology, telecom and industrial names even as share prices fell sharply.

Indian equities rose on the back of positive US inflation figures that reduced expectations of further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. The gains came despite ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and oil prices near 85 dollars a barrel.
