Japan extends Self-Defense Forces deployment in Middle East

The Japanese government decided on Friday to extend the deployment of Self-Defense Forces personnel in the Middle East for one year to address issues such as maritime piracy. The antipiracy mission in the Gulf of Aden off Somalia and the intelligence-gathering mission for ship safety in the wider Middle East region will run until November 19 next year. The deployment to the headquarters of the Multinational Force and Observers in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula has also been extended until the end of November 2026.

The Japanese government announced on Friday, November 7, 2025, the extension of Self-Defense Forces (SDF) activities in the Middle East. This decision aims to address threats such as maritime piracy by extending the deployment period for one year.

Specifically, the SDF's antipiracy mission in the Gulf of Aden off Somalia has been extended until November 19 next year. The intelligence-gathering mission to ensure the safety of ships in the wider Middle East region will also continue until the same date. Additionally, the deployment of SDF members to the headquarters of the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula has been prolonged until the end of November 2026.

Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi stated during a news conference, "We will continue to contribute to the peace and stability of the international community through these activities." This extension underscores Japan's commitment to international peacekeeping efforts, with the antipiracy mission in the Gulf of Aden being one of the key operations.

These missions play a vital role in maintaining Japan's engagement in the Middle East and securing maritime safety. The government's decision was made within the framework of international cooperation, emphasizing contributions to regional stability.
