Japanese lawmakers rename pro-Taiwan group to include Taiwan

A cross-party group of Japanese lawmakers promoting ties with Taiwan decided Thursday to rename itself with the word Taiwan explicitly included, a move that could draw backlash from China.

The group approved the name change at a plenary meeting in Tokyo. It had previously used a kanji indicating Republic of China, Taiwan's official name, and was known in English as the Japan-ROC Diet Members' Consultative Council.

The new name is not available in English at this point. Keiji Furuya of the Liberal Democratic Party, head of the council, said membership now exceeds 300 and called it proof of the unshakable bond between Japan and Taiwan.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te delivered a video message to the gathering, which included at least one Taiwanese government official. Discussions on the name change were held behind closed doors.

China's Taiwan Affairs Office announced 10 measures on Sunday to promote cross-strait economic cooperation and livelihoods, following Kuomintang chairwoman Cheng Li-wun's six-day visit to the mainland, where she met Xi Jinping. The plan has been welcomed by Taiwan industries but drawn warnings from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te urged stronger ties with Japan during a news conference in Taipei, stating that the two are key to a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

Taiwan business leaders have urged the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to consider Beijing’s 10-point plan, sparking a row after the island’s government accused industry groups of bowing to pressure from mainland China.

Japan's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is split over a Japan Innovation Party (JIP) proposal to criminalize desecration of the national flag. Some LDP members call for passing a bill in the current Diet session, while others voice concerns about freedom of expression.
