The Kenya National Examinations Council has dismissed social media claims of involvement in changing national exam scores. It alerted the public to a scam where fraudsters solicit payments for supposed result manipulations via WhatsApp. The council emphasized the security measures in place to maintain exam integrity.
On December 3, 2025, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) issued a statement refuting allegations spread on social media that it participates in altering results from recent national exams. The council highlighted an ongoing fraudulent scheme targeting anxious parents and students, where imposters create WhatsApp groups and channels to offer paid services for boosting scores in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA).
KNEC stressed that the examination process includes anonymizing all answer scripts to safeguard candidates' identities and ensure fair marking. In its official warning, the council stated: "Beware of fraudsters purporting to be able to alter candidates’ scores during the marking of the KCSE examination or KJSEA. Please note that all candidates’ answer scripts are anonymised to protect their identity and ensure integrity during marking." It further advised: "Do not fall prey to fraudulent activities on social media. Stay alert."
This comes ahead of result announcements: the Ministry of Education confirmed that 2025 KPSEA and KJSEA outcomes will be released on December 11, with KCSE results following in January 2026. The exams involved large numbers of participants, including 996,078 for KCSE, one of the biggest cohorts recently. Additionally, 1,130,669 Grade 9 students took the KJSEA from October 27 to November 3, marking the inaugural national test under the Competency-Based Curriculum for junior secondary. Another 1,298,089 Grade 6 pupils completed the KPSEA, contributing to a total of over 3.4 million learners assessed nationwide.
