A Las Vegas judge sentenced 27-year-old Oh'Ryan Brooks to a minimum of seven years in prison for leaving the scene of a fatal crash that killed 12-year-old Cristofer Suarez. The incident occurred on October 3, 2025, near Eastern Avenue and Owens Avenue while Suarez walked to school. Brooks accepted a plea deal that dropped charges including DUI and reckless driving.
Oh'Ryan Brooks appeared in Clark County court on Monday, where Judge Maria Gall imposed the sentence of seven to 17.5 years, with credit for 186 days served. Prosecutors had sought 20 years, while Brooks's attorney requested two to five years. 'Nothing will bring the victim back,' Judge Gall said. 'However, there has to be accountability for this crime, and given the circumstances, the proposed five years does not provide the accountability required in this case.' According to KTNV, both sides agreed evidence did not support Brooks's claim that another vehicle cracked his windshield, impairing his vision. Brooks admitted fleeing the scene but denied causing the crash, calling it a 'complete accident' as he apologized to Suarez's family. He also must pay $6,953.31 in restitution to Cristofer's mother, Martina Suarez, who said the amount fell short of funeral costs. Police reports indicate Brooks smoked a THC vape pen before dropping his children at school and again afterward. Surveillance video captured him striking Suarez around 7:40 a.m. in an active school zone, sending the boy into a wrought-iron fence. A witness reported Brooks speeding on Owens Avenue. Officers found Brooks swaying, slurring words, and nearly falling during arrest after tracking his Mitsubishi SUV via license plate. Suarez's mother addressed the court, pleading for maximum punishment. 'Today marks six months since I heard his time of death, and I still hope to wake up from this horrible nightmare one day,' she said. After sentencing, she told KTNV the outcome allowed her family to hear details of the harm done.
