Linux 6.19 kernel integrates Realtek RTL8125K Ethernet support

The Linux 6.19 kernel development introduces native support for Realtek's new RTL8125K 2.5G Ethernet chip through patches to the r8169 driver. Submitted by kernel contributor Heiner Kallweit, this integration promises improved stability over proprietary drivers. The move aligns with growing demands for efficient networking in data centers and edge computing.

In the ongoing Linux 6.19 kernel cycle, Realtek Semiconductor has advanced hardware compatibility by submitting patches for its RTL8125K Ethernet application-specific integrated circuit. These patches, authored by veteran contributor Heiner Kallweit, integrate the chip into the mainline kernel's r8169 driver, enabling seamless PHY detection and configuration without user intervention.

The patch series, posted to the Netdev mailing list, consists of seven commits. They add RTL8125K constants to the driver's chip tables, enhance auto-detection via vendor-specific registers, and address initialization quirks observed during bring-up. Kallweit explained in the cover letter: “This patchset adds support for Realtek RTL8125K as used in forthcoming Ethernet cards.” Testing on reference boards verified link establishment at 2.5Gbps full duplex, with power-saving features preserved and full offload capabilities like TSO, GSO, and RSS supported, as shown in ethtool outputs.

This development builds on prior Realtek integrations, such as RTL8125D support in Linux 6.14 and RTL8127A 10GbE in 6.16, as part of the kernel's broader networking enhancements. It counters longstanding issues with Realtek's proprietary r8125 driver, which has faced stability problems and build failures on recent kernels, as noted in user forums like Arch Linux discussions from June 2024.

Phoronix reported on the patches on November 21, 2025, highlighting their significance amid rising AI workloads and edge computing needs. A related post on X garnered over 2,500 views, stating: “Linux 6.19 To Add Support For The Realtek RTL8125K—Realtek preps Linux support for a new 2.5G Ethernet ASIC.” The RTL8125K extends the RTL8125 family, delivering 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet over standard CAT5e cabling for motherboards and network cards.

For enterprises, this upstream support reduces reliance on out-of-tree drivers and manual installations, previously detailed in guides from December 2023 and April 2025. It mitigates vendor lock-in in virtualized environments, as debated in XCP-ng forums in May 2025, and positions Realtek chips for broader adoption in servers and embedded systems as Linux 6.19-rc1 approaches post-6.18 stable release.
