Luca Guadagnino discusses AI after Amazon drops 'Artificial'

Italian director Luca Guadagnino spoke about AI during a television interview on Friday, shortly after Amazon MGM dropped his film about OpenAI founder Sam Altman.

Guadagnino appeared on the program "Otto e Mezzo" on Italy's La7 Attualità. He declined to comment directly on the project, stating, "Unfortunately, I can't say much because we are right in the middle of this situation."

The director shifted focus to broader issues around AI tools. He described them as a technological gadget full of flaws that will likely improve, while noting concerns over data processing, energy use, and potential future sentience.

Guadagnino highlighted changes in society and identity, referencing scenes filmed in San Francisco. He pointed to self-driving cars passing homeless people affected by fentanyl as a disturbing image of the times.

Other distributors including Netflix, A24 and Focus have passed on the film, which stars Andrew Garfield as Altman and Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk. Mubi remains among those still circling the $40 million project.
