Luigi Mangione's attorneys plan to argue that he suffered from an extreme emotional disturbance during the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The strategy emerged at a state court hearing in New York City.
Mangione appeared in a New York City courtroom for the hearing on his state murder case. His lawyers said they will seek to show he acted under extreme emotional disturbance, which could lead a jury to convict him of manslaughter rather than murder.
A judge dismissed one weapons possession charge against him at the hearing. The court also unsealed records detailing the defense plans that were filed earlier.
Mangione faces separate federal charges in the case. His state trial was scheduled to begin on Sept. 8, while federal jury selection was scheduled to start on Oct. 5.
