Lula government extends gasoline subsidy of R$ 0.44 per liter for 30 days

The Ministry of Finance announced on Thursday (23) a 30-day extension of the R$ 0.44 per liter gasoline subsidy, effective from July 26.

Minister Dario Durigan signed the order maintaining the previous subsidy amount, which was set to expire on July 25. The measure aims to cushion the impact of rising international oil prices, influenced by the conflict in the Middle East.

The diesel subsidy of R$ 1.12 per liter had already been extended for 60 days on July 16. The government had planned at the end of June to gradually reduce subsidies after initial oil price declines.

The subsidies were introduced in May as an emergency action amid escalating Middle East tensions, which pushed Brent crude above US$ 98 per barrel.

The black-red coalition has decided to let the fuel discount expire as planned on June 30. Faction representatives warned of possible price increases and announced swift countermeasures.

The German government's fuel discount took effect at midnight. Taxes on petrol and diesel drop by about 17 cents per litre for two months. It remains unclear how quickly pump prices will reflect the cut.

Despite the fuel tax discount, prices in Germany have risen again after an initial drop. ADAC and the Federal Cartel Office criticize that the 17-cent-per-liter tax cut is not fully passed on to consumers. Oil companies and associations dispute this.
