A 39-year-old man was charged on Monday with gross causing death of another after driving into and killing a 14-year-old girl at Södervärn in Malmö on May 22.
The man had sought care twice at the psychiatric emergency department in Malmö hours before the crash. He was denied care the first time and left the emergency department voluntarily the second time after leaving his driver’s license behind.
His defense lawyer Sanna Herlin states that the man wished staff had acted faster and admitted him. He admits several crimes but says he would never have driven that way if he had been well.
Psychiatry services in Malmö are now launching an internal review. Operations manager Måns Gerle says the investigation will map the course of events to identify what could have been done differently.
The man is also charged with threats against officials and careless driving. A paragraph 7 examination showed he suffered from a serious mental disorder at the time of the crime.
