Max B releases first mixtape since prison release

Just over a month after his release from prison, Harlem rapper Max B has surprise-dropped his seventh Public Domain mixtape. Titled Public Domain 7: The Purge, the 25-track project features collaborations with A$AP Rocky, Kehlani, French Montana, and others. This marks his first full-length release in four years.

Max B, a 47-year-old rapper from Harlem, was released from prison on November 9, 2025, after serving 20 years of a reduced sentence originally set at 75 years. In 2009, he was convicted on charges including felony murder, kidnapping, and armed robbery related to a 2006 armed robbery in New Jersey that resulted in a man's death. Although Max B was in another state during the incident, he was found guilty; his sentence was later shortened due to a conflict of interest in the case and a plea deal on aggravated manslaughter. He will remain on parole for five years.

The rapper wasted no time resuming his music career. Public Domain 7: The Purge, released on December 22, 2025, follows his 2021 album Negro Spirituals and continues his long-running Public Domain mixtape series. In a recent Billboard interview, Max B teased the project, saying, “It never went nowhere; that’s why we’re on seven.” He added, “It may have taken a little minute, but we on seven.” The mixtape includes a posthumous feature from the late New York rapper Chinx, alongside contributions from A$AP Rocky, Kehlani, French Montana, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, and more.

Max B had promised to "open the floodgates" upon his early release after a 16-year stint, and this surprise drop fulfills that vow. The project revives his signature sound, building on the series' legacy, with earlier installments like Public Domain 3: Domain Pain ranking among notable rap mixtapes.
