Mojang has announced the Mounts of Mayhem update for Minecraft, version 1.21.10, expected to launch in late December 2025 as the fourth major update of the year. This update introduces new rideable mounts like the Nautilus and Zombie horses, along with the Spear weapon. The first pre-release build is now available for Java Edition.
Release Details
The Mounts of Mayhem update follows Mojang's commitment to four updates per year. Previous releases include Spring to Life on March 25, 2025; Chase the Skies on June 17, 2025; and The Copper Age on September 30, 2025. A Minecraft news post confirms, "Mounts of Mayhem will be our fourth game drop of 2025." The update's first pre-release build has shipped for Java Edition, with full patch notes on the Minecraft website. Players using Snapshots can test features in beta.
New Features
Nautilus
The Nautilus becomes a rideable underwater mob, the first aquatic mount in Minecraft. Tame it with pufferfish and equip a saddle for high-speed travel. It provides the Breath of the Nautilus status effect to prevent drowning but cannot survive on land. Armor options include copper, iron, gold, diamond, or Netherite. A Zombie Nautilus variant may appear ridden by Drowned mobs.
Zombie Horses
Previously limited to Creative mode, Zombie horses now spawn in Survival within Savannah and Plains biomes. These passive mobs have an undead green appearance and can be ridden, though taming details remain undisclosed. They may spawn with Zombies as riders.
Spear
This new tiered weapon expands combat options for melee or mounted use. Crafted from copper, iron, gold, diamond, or Netherite, it features charged attacks to unmount enemies and jabs for distance control. Damage increases with speed, enhanced when used on mounts, with Elytra, or in minecarts.
The update promises significant changes to Minecraft's sandbox gameplay, focusing on mobility and combat.
