MIT Study Advances Efficient Quantum Dot LED Screens

Researchers from MIT and Samsung have developed improvements to quantum dot LED technology that could enhance picture quality and energy efficiency in future TVs, smartphones, and VR headsets.

The team published its findings Friday in the journal Science Advances. The study examined structural changes in QD-LEDs and tested an acrylate-based resin to slow degradation and extend lifespan.

Vladimir Bulović, the study's senior author and an MIT professor, said the version would be simpler to make, more efficient, and higher performing than current options. It could also apply to sensors and lasers.

CNET Editor in Chief David Katzmaier noted that electrically excited QD-LEDs promise better image quality than OLED screens. However, he said the technology will likely take years to reach the market and even longer to become affordable.
