Samsung highlights smartphone expertise for smart glasses

Samsung Electronics described its upcoming smart glasses as an extension of the smartphone experience during a press briefing in London on Thursday.

Choi Jae-in, head of the extended reality research and development team, said the smart glasses extend the smartphone-centered experience rather than replace it. The devices are voice-based and non-display, powered by Qualcomm's wearable chipset, with up to nine hours of battery life.

Samsung showcased four models developed with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. It has secured more than 200 patents, about 10 percent focused on privacy protection. The company applies smartphone-grade durability tests plus over 20 new methods developed for the glasses.

Split computing processes light tasks on the glasses while heavier AI workloads run on connected smartphones. A Galaxy Watch can act as a controller, and audio switches automatically to Galaxy Buds.

Choi noted Samsung is taking a different approach from Meta by emphasizing reduced weight and all-day comfort. Pricing will start in the premium range.
